Guddi Bo | Lohri Session in Amritsar

So Ji, I am back… I mean I am away oops oh yar mera MATBAL I was away to Jandiala Guru [Gur Ki Jandiala] i.e. my village near Amritsar this Lohri Season [Makar Sankranti Season]. I did not want to go as my parents were also going along [they just cant watch the scene of me playing with the awesome village brats ] but had to go as brother was here from Australia and forced me along.

My Cousin Batti and Admin giving poses for the 2009 Annual Guddi Awards

We Started in the morning. First we went to Hoshiarpur. Made a small stop over at my Fuffar Ji’s [ My Father's Sister's Husband ] Hot & Cold Sweet Corner Shop in Chabhaal, Had a cold drink(which would eventually bring havoc + tsunami in my stomach in 2 days, I will brief you and add more causes as we go along) and moved on to their house. We reached hoshiarpur and met my Bhua Ji[Fathers Sister, Had Patties (reference:Tsunami is stomach) and moved on to meet my Sister [Massi's (Mother's Sister) daughter] who is married and settled in Mukerian.

We then reached Mukerian and ate stomach full of late lunch (ref: Tsunami gearing up now). I took some time out to fly a kite with Mneet [My Bhanja (sisters son)] and but that time it was 6:00 and we started to head towards Jandiala. Reached Jandiala at about 9:30pm, I was more than expected a chilly night(ref: tsunami attacks more in cold); By this time I had marked 6 shifts to my pind’s divine rest room. I ate my dinner and slept.

Pic clicked while flying kite at Jandiala terrace

Next day (Tsunami was on full swing; I completed the 7th Phera to the rest room) and after that we started for Amritsar where me mom and dad dropped off at Mama Ji’s [Mothers Brother] house and Preet and Batti left for Mr Chahal’s Marriage (He got a Safari in Daaj :p). I was bored all day till 4:00 when they came back home (I completed 12 phera’s). Then I went along with Batti to loiter in the city and my parents and preet went to The Golden Temple. I, as usual had Batta[Special Masala Lemon Soda] + Fruit Cream + Juice + !Khatte Ladoo + Sandwich (reference: Tsunami) and went back home to have stomach full dinner(+2 pheras) and called it a day.

Next day was atlast wonderfull. Warm Sunny and slow winds suitable for Guddi Maniacs. I am Batti left for Jandiala while the others hung back for more Rishtedaar Greeting Ceremonies :p.

We bought Guddi’s [Finally I am telling you this secret.. Guddi is a Kite :p ] + Chrakhri [Spool of thread to fly a kite] worth climbed the below shown WAR TERRACE for combats.

This was the terrace which witnessed the Aussi Spoof

When preet reached back, He saw us flying kites and enjoying, which persuaded him to join us on the terrace, albeit rather unconvincingly. He had to climd the easiest one to join but alas, he could not… See what happened to his efforts, dreams and body below. He just had to climb along the arrows.

A Guddi is flown and has a few jargon’s attached to it.

  • Thaell (When 2 strings of kites are looped, one person loosens his thread to avoid a Guddi Bo)
  • Shurli (When there is a Paecha, sending waves along the thread is called a shurli, Its helps to Bo the others Guddi and also twirl along his thread+guddi and fetch it back down)
  • Khichh (It generally follows the thaell, one loosens his thread and then suddenly gives it a jerk to cut the opponents thread)

Batti had called his friends who were standing about 15 Kotha’s away [Distance is villages is measured in kotha's(terrace's) by young boys as they only need to jump terraces to reach the other point] to declare war with the others.

Admin Flying Guddi

Now it was time for Mission Sharlaa. Soorj bought some Sharlaa from Sukhaa Halwayee to eat along. Sharlaa is extremely delicious dish made of Fried Pahari [mountain] potatoes and Masala. If served with chutney, it can be deadly awesome. I ate 30Rs sharla in about 30 seconds(reference: Tsunami, I was regular with my pheras in between; 5+). Below are a few pictures of Sharla Ceremony.

And below my friends, is the Sukha Halwayee Shop, where the sharlaa is prepared.

We then went off for a ride in the village, you see… Mur Mur Yaad Sataawe Pind Diyaa Galiyaa Di :p

Here are a few pictures of my pind’s galee’s

We bought some more guddi’s on our way back. Here are a few pictures of our shopping spree.

Then we went to play a cricket match. I got a Hatrick in wickets. The most funny match ever played. Match was on and we all were very seriously playing in the huge ground. Suddenly someone shouted “Guddi Bo, Buch Lavo”; and then what, Batsmen, Bowler, Wicket Keeper + all fielders left the match and started running after the lone kite which at last was sneaked out by some other guy… that was a big LOL scene… I wish I had a camera at that time.
Cheers to the Punjabi Spirit of Living

Update : Here are the 2 videos we shot in Mere Pind Diya Galiyaa with me as a camera man and batti my cousin as the rider. We were on his Splender.
